Archived Tabs

Archived Tabs closes browser tabs you haven’t used in a while and keeps them in an archive for 30 days, so you can reopen any of them with one click. It works across Safari, Chrome, Brave, Edge, Arc and the other browsers Live Tabs reads on your Mac, with one set of rules for all of them. Tabs you still need stay open with tab locks and Never Close rules.

A Labs feature, new in SupaSidebar 1.5.0 and part of Pro. Turn on Archived Tabs in Preferences → Labs first. Without Pro, you can use it free for 30 days from the day you turn it on. See Labs.

How Auto-Close works

Auto-Close gives every open tab a timer. Using a tab restarts its timer. When a tab sits unused for longer than your Close After time, SupaSidebar closes it and saves it to the archive.

Auto-Close never closes these tabs.

  • The tab you’re on - the current tab in each browser window stays open
  • Locked tabs - right-click a tab in Live Tabs and choose Lock Tab
  • Tabs that match a Never Close rule - see Never Close rules
  • Tabs in an Excluded Browser - see Auto-Close settings
  • Tabs that would drop a window below Keep At Least - each window keeps at least that many tabs
  • Browsers you don’t use and hidden websites - SupaSidebar doesn’t see tabs from browsers with Use unticked or Live Tabs turned off in Your browsers, or from sites under Hidden websites, so it never closes or archives them

When tabs start closing

  • Nothing closes right away. Every tab’s timer starts when you turn Auto-Close on, so the first tabs close after one full Close After period.
  • Timers restart when SupaSidebar launches and when you change Close After. A tab only closes after SupaSidebar has seen it unused for the full time.
  • Tabs close gradually, a few per minute and oldest first, so a whole window never disappears at once.
  • Audio isn’t detected. SupaSidebar can’t tell when a background tab is playing music or video. Lock tabs like a music player.

Turn on Auto-Close

  1. Open Preferences → Labs and turn on Archived Tabs.
  2. Click Set up Archived Tabs on the card, or open Preferences → Browsers → Archived Tabs.
  3. Turn on Auto-Close Inactive Tabs.
  4. Pick a Close After time.

While Archived Tabs is on, you can also open the pane from the sidebar’s ⋯ menu → Archived Tabs….

Auto-Close settings

The settings appear in Preferences → Browsers → Archived Tabs → Auto-Close Inactive Tabs once the switch is on.

SettingWhat it doesDefault
Close AfterHow long a tab can sit unused12 hours
Keep At LeastFewest tabs left in each window10 tabs
Excluded BrowsersBrowsers Auto-Close skips completelyNone
  • Close After offers 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 3 days and 7 days.
  • Custom… at the bottom of Close After adds a Custom Duration row, where you combine days, hours and minutes. The shortest time is 1 minute.
  • Keep At Least counts locked tabs and the current tab. Set it from 1 to 1,000.
  • Excluded Browsers lists the browsers installed on your Mac. Check a browser to skip every tab in it.

Never Close rules

A Never Close rule keeps matching tabs open even after their timer runs out. Use it for sites you always want around, like your email or calendar.

Add a rule

  1. In Preferences → Browsers → Archived Tabs → Never Close Rules, click Add Rule.
  2. Type a domain or part of a URL, like mail.google.com.
  3. Pick a Match Mode, then click Add Rule.
Match ModeProtectsExample
DomainThe site and all its subdomainsgoogle.com keeps mail.google.com open
ContainsAny URL containing the textcalendar keeps any URL with “calendar”
  • Domain rules accept a full URL too. SupaSidebar keeps only the domain and drops a leading www. or *..
  • Contains rules ignore capitalization.
  • A rule that already exists can’t be added twice.

Edit or delete a rule

Click the pencil next to a rule to change its text or match mode. Click the ✕ to delete it.

Add a rule with AI

Click Add with AI to open Ask AI in the Command Panel with the request started. Describe the site you want to keep and Ask AI creates the rule. Ask AI can also list, change and delete your rules, and so can AI assistants connected through MCP. These tools are available only while Archived Tabs is on.

Reopen archived tabs

The Archived Tabs list at the bottom of Preferences → Browsers → Archived Tabs shows every tab Auto-Close closed, newest first, with when each one was archived.

  • Reopen - opens the page in the browser it was closed from and removes it from the archive
  • ✕ - removes one tab from the archive
  • Clear Archive - removes every archived tab after you confirm. This can’t be undone

A page appears in the archive once, even if Auto-Close closes it more than once. Archived tabs aren’t saved links and don’t appear in your sidebar. To keep one for good, reopen it and save it.

How long archived tabs stay

Archived tabs stay for 30 days after they’re archived, then SupaSidebar removes them automatically.

Turn off Auto-Close

  • Stop closing tabs - turn off Auto-Close Inactive Tabs. The archive and your rules stay.
  • Turn off the whole feature - turn off Archived Tabs in Preferences → Labs. Auto-Close stops and the pane and menu item hide. Your settings are kept for when you turn it back on.

Without Pro, Auto-Close also stops when the free month ends. Nothing closes after that. See what happens when the free month ends.

Frequently asked questions

Does Auto-Close work while SupaSidebar is closed?

No. SupaSidebar times tabs only while it’s running, and every timer restarts when it launches. A tab closes only after SupaSidebar has seen it unused for the full Close After time.

Will Auto-Close close the tab I’m reading?

No. The current tab in each browser window never closes. Its timer starts fresh when you switch away from it.

Are archived tabs the same as the Trash?

No. The Trash holds saved links you deleted. The archive holds open browser tabs that Auto-Close closed. Each has its own list and its own time limit.

Does SupaSidebar share the pages it closes?

No. If you share analytics, Auto-Close sends only settings and counts, like your Close After time, how many tabs closed and how many rules you have. The pages it closes and the text of your rules are never included.
