Tab Switcher

Tab Switcher lets you switch browser tabs the way Cmd Tab switches apps. Tap Ctrl Tab to go back to the tab you were on before, or hold Ctrl to pick from your 5 most recent tabs. It works across every browser you have open, like Arc’s tab switcher.

A Labs feature, new in SupaSidebar 1.6.0 and part of Pro. Turn on Tab Switcher in Preferences → Labs, or the Ctrl Tab switch in Preferences → Browsers → Browser keys. Both are the same switch. Without Pro, you can use it free for 30 days from the day you turn it on. See Labs.

How Tab Switcher works

  • Tap Ctrl Tab - goes straight back to your last tab, with no window in the way. Tap again to flip between the two.
  • Hold Ctrl and press Tab - shows your 5 most recent tabs. Keep holding Ctrl and press Tab to move down the list, or Shift Tab to move up. Let go of Ctrl to open the tab you picked.
  • Click a tab in the switcher to open it right away.
  • Press Ctrl Esc to close the switcher without switching.

The list starts with the tab you’re on, then the tabs you used most recently, in any browser. Picking a tab from another browser brings that browser to the front.

Tab Switcher reads the same tab history as Live Tabs and the sidebar’s Back and Forward buttons. A tab appears once you’ve visited it while SupaSidebar is running, and only while it’s still open.

Only while a browser is in front

Tab Switcher only listens while a browser is the app in front. In Terminal, VS Code, Slack and every other app, Ctrl Tab keeps doing what it always did.

Inside a browser, Ctrl Tab opens Tab Switcher instead of the browser’s next tab, like it does in Arc. Browsers with Use unticked in Your browsers count as other apps, so they keep their own Ctrl Tab.

Choosing a layout

Open Preferences → Browsers → Browser keys and click a layout under Layout. Each one shows a small drawing of how it looks. The layouts and the shortcut show there only while Tab Switcher is on. Before 1.7.0 they had their own Tab Switcher page in Preferences.

LayoutWhat it shows
Cards (default)A picture and title for each tab, like Arc
PicturesJust pictures, like Cmd Tab, with the title below
ListTitles in a list, with a big picture of the one you pick

The pictures are each page’s preview image, the one a site shows when you share its link. SupaSidebar keeps them in memory only and never saves them to disk.

Changing the shortcut

In Preferences → Browsers → Browser keys, click the shortcut under the Ctrl Tab row and press a new one. The rest follows your new keys.

  • Moving up the list - your shortcut plus Shift. A shortcut that already uses Shift has no move-up key.
  • Closing without switching - your shortcut’s modifier keys plus Esc.
  • No modifier keys - a shortcut without Ctrl, Cmd, Opt or Shift can’t be held, so it always acts like a tap.

When the free month ends

Without Pro, Tab Switcher turns off when its free month ends. Ctrl Tab goes back to your browser’s own next-tab shortcut, and your layout and shortcut are kept for when you upgrade.
